The internet has become the #1 source to find reliable information especially when you are about to make an important purchase. When it comes time to find out which synthetic oil is best for a Chevy Duramax then Google is the most likely place to start. Here’s what I found out when I googled Best Oil For Duramax.
What I have seen on Google when I search for “best oil for duramax” is your typical display of paid ads for motor oil and numerous opinions on who makes the best oil for Duramax. I have no issues with anyone’s opinion, however I do have a problem with someone who recommends one product over another when they didn’t perform any side by side testing.
Most of you aren’t chemists and neither am I. So instead of giving you specs on terms you’ve never heard of I will explain a simple testing procedure I have been doing for over 22 years. It’s a simple fuel mileage test that will clearly demonstrate one oil’s quality over another.
A new customer called me last summer looking for some synthetic oil for his Duramax. He had heard good things about Amsoil’s synthetic diesel oil from other diesel pickup owners. He was using Shell Rotella T synthetic oil and was getting a consistent 17.5 mpg.
The fact that he kept accurate fuel mileage records was perfect because now within about 3 tanks of fuel he should see a significant difference in his mpg average. Once the engine was flushed with Amsoil’s Engine Flush he installed Amsoil’s Best Synthetic Oil for the Duramax. I asked my new customer to give me a call after he went trough 3 tanks of fuel.
A few weeks later my customer called back with his results. To his surprise (not mine) he was now getting 19.3 mpg. The mpg went up slightly on each tank: 18.1 on tank #1, 18.8 on tank #2 and finally 19.3 on tank #3. His truck started much easier and ran smoother.
One thing I have determined in 22 years of testing Amsoil products and that is the fuel gauge and your calculator won’t lie to you. I don’t try to “sell” people Amsoil, but what I do try to do is get prospective customers to run a simple fuel mileage comparison. This way your calculator will tell you which oil is best not me.
