Back in 1996, there was no Craigslist and quite frankly I don’t even remember if there was an internet, if there was I’m pretty sure it was rather primitive. Also back in ’96 to around 2001 I was no different than a lot of you that advertise on CL and did side work on cars to make a little extra money. The idea to work on cars for extra money came to me after I did some extensive testing on a few Amsoil products. I was very skeptical of 25,000-mile drain intervals at first, but I am very glad I completed my field test as the results were exceptional. Back when I started my Amsoil business Amsoil only had the 25,000-mile/1-year oil change, however today we have other options better suited for not only the backyard mechanic but also small business owners.
Since I was already changing oil why not become an Amsoil Dealer and become my own supplier of Amsoil at wholesale prices plus give my clients a much better oil that would last considerably longer. Well, my idea was a hit and as word spread my business grew to the point all I did was oil changes and disc brake jobs. At first, I thought the price of my oil change at the time of $69.95 would scare people away, but I was dead wrong as I quickly learned people were thrilled to stop going to the quick lubes 3 or 4 times per year. My customers loved the convenience of one oil change a year because remember back in ’96 the big boys over at Jiffy Lube were still pushing 3,000-mile oil changes.
How Can You Benefit?
The reason I brought you to this page was not to tell you about my humble beginnings as I started my Amsoil business but to tell you why I’m still doing this 20 years later. I can give you my reason with one simple word; commissions! That’s right, commissions by wholesaling the product and not retailing it. You see when I was changing oil all those years using Amsoil I was making a tidy profit of around $32.00-$35.00 for every single oil change and that was just on the retail side that I charged my customers. I started to make even more money once I understood how Amsoil paid out commissions not only on my own purchases but also on commercial accounts I set up to use Amsoil within their business.
As an example, my first two big commercial accounts were a local fire department that services a small community just south of Columbus and a well-known carpet cleaner based in Dublin that has a fleet of over 30 vans. What makes being an Amsoil dealer so profitable is Amsoil’s home office up in Superior, Wisconsin handles all the details. My clients call in their own orders, Amsoil Inc. ships the product to them, Amsoil bills the customer and handles all the account receivables and I earn a commission based off the quantity of oil that was ordered, it’s a pretty simple full proof plan that works and the best part; NO INVENTORY.
I quickly understood the commission wasn’t all that big when I first started wholesaling Amsoil, however, once I reached the top level of 23% I quit doing oil changes on the side and focused on getting more commercial and retail accounts. Keep in mind I still hold down a full-time job, Amsoil is a part-time venture for me because it is very easy to do and once you have your accounts set up it all pretty much runs on autopilot. It cost me $30.00/year to keep my Amsoil business active where I continue to earn commissions on accounts I have set up even as long as 18 years ago.
