Some years ago before Mobil 1 developed their newest synthetic oil that can now magically last 20,000 miles or 1-year I wrote an article comparing the two oils, Amsoil vs. Mobil 1. Back then Amsoil easily won that comparison test. Now let’s take a closer look at Mobil 1’s latest oil and do another Mobil 1 vs. Amsoil test.
Why did Mobil 1 all of a sudden in 2017 start telling everyone their synthetic oil can go on an annual oil change? Did they discover something new or better additives? No not really. Here’s a fact most people are unaware of. Back in 1976 Mobil 1’s bottle actually said you can change your oil once-a-year or every 25,000-miles. Oddly enough this was exactly what Amsoil recommended back in 1972, four years before Mobil 1.
Why did Mobil 1 take 45 long years to reintroduce a synthetic oil that can last 1-year? Two reasons. The first is obvious; money pure and simple. Mobil wouldn’t be selling as much oil so they started marketing their synthetic oil as a high quality product for normal drain intervals. For the most part that strategy worked and is the reason you see so many Mobil 1 vs. Amsoil articles. The second reason was because Mobil didn’t feel the buying public just wasn’t ready for extended drain intervals.
Amsoil clearly dominates the extended drain market because we literally have no competition. Mobil 1 has only one clear advantage over Amsoil. What is that one advantage they have? It’s fairly obvious; multi-million dollar TV commercials. Amsoil spends their investment dollars on the highest quality raw materials to blend the highest quality synthetic lubricants on the market. Now are you beginning to see why Amsoil has never lost a head to head comparison with Mobil 1.
I have hundred’s of customer’s that use Amsoil’s Signature Series motor oil. Roughly 30% of them were ex-Mobil 1 users. With over 22 years of experience selling Amsoil I always had an easier time switching Mobil 1 guys over to Amsoil versus someone using another brand. I didn’t have to explain the high quality aspect of Amsoil because Mobil 1 guys were already using a high quality motor oil. It’s no longer necessary to compare Mobil 1 vs. Amsoil because we just keep winning.
